Report: | Some people are on the court.................they think it's all over. It is now.
Long time Division 1 leaders Broiadland 2 had seen their title hopes dashed in an unexpected 15-7 reverse to EA3 earlier in the month, their first defeat since the very first match of the season, and virtually handing the division win to their opponents. Only for an even bigger upset to occur 2 days later with the Norwich team going down by an incredible 16-4 defeat to Barnham Broom 2 when being unable to put out a full strength team. These results threw things right back into the melting pot for the final fixtures, putting Barnham Broom 2 right back into contention with everything at stake. EA3 had in the meantime put themselves back in a very strong position with a good win at Rossis to take a 14 point lead coming into this fixture, with both teams potentially capable of being overhauled by the team coming up hard on the rails with a strong late run - BB2
So all to play for. Broadland were fortunate in being able to field argueably their strongest team, and felt quietly confident of pushing the result right to the wire. 14 Points required, without conceedng too many was the task.
Jake Bond at 3, started confidently, and after Phil Davis had suffered a minor knee twist in the second game, the result was not really in doubt. 3-0 Broadland. Adam Goodson at 2 started like a train with real focus for the visitors, and swept Rod Taylor aside 13-3 in the first. Looking like he meant business, it was difficult to see how this match could possibly turn round for Broadland to claim thier much needed points. However, turn round it did. Ironically the ease with which Adam had won the first game may well have contributed to his downfall in the second. A few errors crept in, Rod upped his game playing some sharp drops to the front to get the winners in first, and Adam finished the game with another error to hand the second and crutial game to Rod, 1-1. At this point Hannah had stepped onto the adjoining court and had a bit of a mare. The enthusiastic Chris Fernandes had charged about the court to great effect forcing numerous errors from Hannah, to win the first and put the match result right up in the air. However, there was an issue. Hannah's pre match preparation had failed to take into account hair management of any kind. It was all over the place with no hair bands, clips or buns in sight, what a pickle. It's a girl thing I'm told. Anyway crazy hair game turned into a good hair day with long golden locks firmly batterned down, and Hannah being able to see clearly now, she was able to take the remaining 3 games dispite the best eforts of her gameful and sporting opponent, Chris. 6-1 to Broadland.
Rod v Adam had continued as before, Adam taking the 3rd 13-5 with a degree of comfort, before Rod still playing in adversity following his recent hospital visit, rallied to pinch the 4th 13-11 using everything he had to get his team over the line with 2 well earned games. The fifth was too much for Rod with Adam taking the last confortably for a deserved 3-2 win. 8-4 Broadland.
A win for Steve Moxey in the last match would be enough. Having played eachother earlier in the season, Luke had won a game in a 3-1 defeat, so a win for Steve was no foregone conclusion. In the end Steve's fitness and concentration for this important match was more than enough for a straight games win. Final result
15-4. Broadland ending up with a whole piont to spare. I don't know what all the fuss was about.
Equally significant was the avoidance of any potential controversy in not having to revisit an early season match in which a question over player eligibility had been raised, and had impacted the League outcome right up to the final game.
All's well that ends well, hopefully. |
