Away Report: | Rossis almost go the Disstance.
Rossis took the long journey on Monday night down to Diss, the reigning Norfolk Squash champions. First up, local hero Matt Sumner resumed his rivalry with Tom “his own biggest fan” Hunt. There was whooping and hollering a plenty, mostly from Tom, but also from the crowd who witnessed a titanic battle. With both players trying to take the rubber off the ball, Tom found himself 2-1 up. Sumner responded in the fourth and the game went down to wire. Momentous rallies ensued and Tom used every inch of his 6’7 frame and wingspan to get racket on the ball enough times to take the match 3-1 and set off on his lap of glory. His open top bus parade of Diss is planned for Friday night, tickets still available.
Shaun “leader of morale” Wright, took on the hard hitting Tim Allenden. With both players clearly desperate for the win, every inch of the court was used to try and break the opponent’s will. With every game close, it came down to the number of errors made. Unfortunately for Rossis, Shaun just tipped the error scale in each game. Thankfully, Shaun soon got over his lose and quickly got in to storytelling mode in the bar, most beginning with “When I used to beat Goodrich…..”
Another rivalry was resumed as Tom “destroyer of men” Smith met the unbreakable Tom Bobbins. However, it was Bobbins in destructive mode in the first game as he simply wiped the floor with his opponent; boasts, crosscourt nicks, drops all found their spot. After some good advice from Matt Bolt (Not Shaun) at the break, Tom settled in his usual game and managed to claim the next two games with some solid length. However, Bobbins does not know the meaning of surrender and sent the match into game five after easily winning the fourth. It was to be Smith, who would keep his calm better in the fifth and win the match 3-2.
Simon “eye candy” Watson was up next against ex-pro and quality
player Martin Levens. Simon started superbly well in the first, battling for every point but never quite getting over the finish line, losing it 14-12. It was at this point that Shaun Wright felt the need to offer his advice, mostly revolving around how bad Simon was playing. With this “confidence boost” the game settled into a similar pattern with Watson playing a loose shot and Levens punishing it. With one or two mistakes Simon could never quite get on top of his opponent and Martin ran out a 3-0 winner which sealed the win for Diss.
The third and final rivalry involved Matt Bolt and Steve Maitland, who always engage in tasty affairs on the court. The match contained several moments of physical contact, dubious lines of approach and the odd bit of fishing from both players. Tom Bobbins superbly marked the match as the intensity rose as they entered the fifth game, with the scores locked at 2-2 and 11 all. The crowd hushed (apart from Mr. Hunt) as these gladiators put in all on the line. However, Mr Bolt asked himself the question “how much did I want it?” and it turned out, just slightly more than Steve. A 3-2 victory for Mr. Bolt but a 17-7 win for Diss, who once again look strong title contenders. |
