Report

Report: After a near 5 year hiatus, Albie returned to the cauldron of team squash to face the ‘fast & the furious’ James Gair. Living up to his reputation, James made a rapid start, with Albie slow to find his feet. By the middle of the second, Albie began to fire on all cylinders, cruising through to take it comfortably. The third was a close race. James nudging ahead and edging it on the line. Roles were reversed in the fourth, with Albie putting in a strong surge in the middle sector to go in to the final circuit all square. Having turned up the dial to 9, Albie raced away, to lead 9-1, only for James to find over-drive to take the next 7 points. Albie failed to cross the line at the first attempt, with James coming along side to force a drag race to decide the outcome, eventually succumbing to the the former Olympic hopeful. The game was plaid in great spirit despite the attempt by the referee to subvert the result by asking James on several occasions to not stand on the ‘T’ to serve!
Despite Adam still suffering from snow blindness and recovering from a ‘cold’ [week-long hangover], he was too strong for Rob, who himself was still getting back into his stride after a lengthy injury lay-off.
A clash of styles was evident in Paul and Phil’s game, with Paul’s desire to rally subverted by Phil’s preference not to do so, seeing them trade the first four games to take it to the fifth, where Phil managed to make a better start, which he maintained through to the conclusion. Once again, the game was not without controversy, as unlike on the other court, Phil’s assertion of illegal serves by his opponent went un-punished by the marker. It was subsequently pointed out to Phil that this is captured in the phrase ‘home advantage’!
Having suffered a heavy defeat against Sumner the last time they met, the ‘home advantage’ favoured Sutton this time round. Never behind in the first two games, Sumner made the better start in the third, only to relinquish his advantage in the closing stages.
The highlight of the evening came off-court, when we retired to the pub for backed potato and chilli and a good old mardle!
