Report

Report: A game of two courts! With Broadland fielding 3 seasoned professionals, and Barnham with a somewhat depleted squad due to the ageing nature of certain members, court 2 witnessed 3-0 victories in fairly short order for both Matthew & Rod against Albie and Chris respectively. Rod in particular taking no prisoners, winning the first 8 points. Chris competed until broadly the middle of the next 2 games, but Rod’s prowess was simply too much for Chris to contend with. Albie briefly led the first at 6-5, but despite numerous changes of serve in the latter stages, Matt edged it. The second was very one-sided, with Matt taking 8 points in a row to seal it. The 3rd was a virtual repeat of the first. Albie made it to 6-3, only for Matt to turn the screw and take 8 of the next 10 points for the win. By contrast, court 3 saw 2 closely contested games. Lucy played some of her best squash of the season and seemed on course for her first win having gone ahead 2-1 after a commanding 3rd. Both players were hitting the ball at pace and covering all corners of the court, but Ollie’s ability to retrieve some of Lucy’s apparent winners forced one too many errors in the closing stages of an enthralling and enjoyable encounter. A game that either player could have won. Lucy scoring more points overall than Ollie. Similarly, Paul & Steve played an immensely competitive game. Not only was it great to watch, the quality of the squash and retrieving from both players was outstanding. Paul’s high T position put more pressure on Steve than had been the case during their encounter at Broadland and this paid dividends. Despite at times looking and sounding like he was spent, and just when Moxey seemed like he was gaining the upper hand, somehow Paul would bounce back with some deft attacking boasts or volley drops. But whatever Paul countered with, Steve more often than not engineered an opening using good height and width to push Paul in to the corners. Eventually the workload took its toll and Steve wrapped up the forth with 5 points on the trot.
All games were played in good spirit and everyone adjourned to the pub for some well-earned sustenance.
