Away Report:'Tough opening game for 2026 for Waterlane Squash and Racketball Club 1st team as they resumed league action facing EA Misfits, away at the Lime Tree Road courts..
Missing 3 players through injury (DG, Capt Ian and James), this thrusted our ever reliable Paul Field into action, sporting his aptly named Super Sub shirt. On the night, Paul was very much up against it Vs Sam Perry and with Paul unable to move round the court as well as I''m sure he''d like, this resulted in 11-4, 11-1 & 11-2 losses in a dominant performance from Sam. Not Paul''s night this time, but cannot fault the effort
Next on was our own ''Roadrunner'' as Liam Day faced the impressive, left hander Matt Johnson. Continuing the theme, a tough opener for Liam as Matt took the first 11-2. A strong showing from Liam in the second as he takes a 4-1 lead, getting involved in some lengthy rallies. However, Matt upped his game to dominate the second half and won 11-5. Liam was still contesting some good rallies in the 3rd, but Matt was able to finish the points off, showing his undoubted quality 11-2
Next up was Jack Taylor facing Katie Cox, fresh from her appearance on the PSA tour at the weekend. Jack knew he was in for a tough encounter after losing to Katie in the home match 3-0. Unfortunately, history repeated itself and there were some long, intense rallies, Katie''s experience enabling her to finish more rallies on a positive note. Whilst each game showed an improvement, the match was lost 11-3, 11-4, 11-7.
Ross ''Saucerer'' renewed his friendly rivalry with James Thacker. A hard fought first game for Ross, as a determined opponent took advantage of some unforced errors to take the first 11-8. The second could have gone either way, but resulted in an 11-9 loss in. A high quality game. Rustiness showing in the third as Ross just couldn''t get going and he succumbed to an 11-3 loss against a high quality player
All the pressure was then on Ali ''Mouseboy'' Dawson for a game win as he faced the impressive Jordan Creed. They played in the same team in their younger years. The opening game paced the way for some extremely high quality squash from 2 very talented players. Fast paced, incredible energy, unbelievable retrievals from both as Jordan took the first 15-13.
The opener was an amazing game as Jordan took it 15-13.
Ali came roaring back with a great example of clean hitting to win the first game of a hard night for Waterlane 11-9. Jordan upped his game in the 3rd combined with some unforced errors from Ali taking it 11-4. Great fighting spirit shown by Ali in the 4th, who was in the match the whole time, but just edged out 11-8. Superb performance though from Ali who showed what he is clearly capable of.
Overall, a difficult defeat for Waterlane 1 against a top team (second in the league). The travelling support on the night was much welcomed by the players. Much learned on the night, and this team will go forward into the next league match with hope and enthusiasm'
