Report: Waterlane 1 v Broadland 1 - Match Report
The second Match of 2026 for the 1st team proved to be a very close encounter against a talented Broadland team.
Fifth Seed Match – Waterlanes’ Liam (Roadrunner) Day against Richard Barnes. An impressive performance from Liam, combining supreme fitness and squash experience, sees him outplay Richard and come away with an emphatic 3 games to love win (11-9, 11-7, 11-2). Richard battled hard and showed some great skills but, he couldn’t quite manage to break down Liams limitless energy.
Fourth Seed Match – Waterlanes’ Max (Digger) Dawson against Kye McCourt-Hall. A rematch of the Broadland home fixture where Kye managed to overcome Max in a tight 3-2 victory. Could Max get revenge this time round? Max (sporting a Liverpool Shirt, I think a club fine might be heading his way) starts well with some impressive straight hitting taking the first game 11-7. The second game is much closer with Max, despite breaking a racket, showing a nice array of shots to take it 11-9. Kye fights back hard in the next 2 games winning them 11-2, 11-8 and taking the match to a deciding 5th game. Max shows great resilience in the fifth, to disrupt the charging Kye to take the fifth game 11-6 and the match by 3 games to 2.
Third Seed Match – Waterlanes’ Ian (Capt Cardio) Beale against a much younger Matthew Hawkes. The first game is a tight affair with neither player showing their best squash. Matt finds his grove to move ahead in the final stages of game to take it 11-8. A great effort from Ian in the second game flying around the court to take a well-deserved second game 11-7. The third game sees Ian battle to an 10-8 lead, but an increase in quality hitting by Matt turns the tide and he takes the game 12-10. The fourth game was an impressive display of quality hitting from Matt that Ian was unable to contend with and sees him comfortably take the game 11-4 and the match 3 games to 1.
Second Seed Match – Waterlanes’ Jack (Duracell) Taylor against the Norfolk over 55s champion Steve Moxey. An outstanding start from Jack saw him take the first 2 close and taxing games 11-9, 12-10, adjusting to the colder court conditions better than Steve who appeared to be struggling with slipping on the court surface. Jacks’ energy and accuracy reaping early benefits. Steve comes roaring back in the next 3 games, clearly upping his game and dominating the T to take the games 11-6, 11-5, 11-5 and win the match 3 games to 2.
First Seed Match – Waterlanes’ Ross (The Saucerer) Wilson against the talented Sam Henden. In the first game Ross created opportunities to take vital points but was unable to convert against a lightning quick Sam (Perhaps some Christmas rustiness). Sams’ consistency of hitting proves decisive taking the first game 11-6. Ross comes roaring back in the second game, playing some excellent energetic squash, finding all the corners and, this time converting point winning opportunities, takes the second game 11-7. Sam ups his game and dominates the third game taking it 11-3. Ross shows real quality at the start of the fourth game, as he raises his game, however, he is unable to cope with the class and early hitting of Sam. Sam takes the fourth game 11-6 and the match 3 game to 1.
Overall, a fantastic match with some real quality squash on show. It was a close match with Broadland 1 taking it by 3 matches to 2 and an 15-10 point victory. A great effort by Waterlane, who were always the underdogs in the match. Next match is on Monday 26 January away against Diss Old Boys. Many thanks, as usual, to all the supporters that came along, James Mitchell for helping with Marking and Andy Wilson for his expert commentary. Thanks also to our Sponsors, @Waterlane Leisure Centre, @Fireskill Health and Safety Training, @Norfolk Premier Coachworks (Porsche Specialists) and @Suffolk Racket Restrings.
