| Report: | Wes v Archie-the first was closely contested, Wes finishing the stronger with Archie making a few unforced errors. The second was even until at 4/4 Archie got too close and was caught on the head by Wes’s racket. After a brief injury break play resumed, but Archie buckled, only scoring one more point. Recomposing himself during the interval, Archie played some good straight drives to the back and took the 3rd to a tie break, but Wes’s experience was evident . The occasional use of the boast wrong-footing Archie at the end of some strenuous rallies.
Neil v Ben-a closely fought, hard hitting and somewhat frantic encounter may have lacked some finesse at times, but neither player gave any quarter. Ben was dominant in the 2nd, however only a couple of points separated them in the other three.
Paul v Matt-having exchanged serves early in the 1st, Paul managed to maintain a 2/3 point cushion until the latter stages, finishing with a run of 4 points. Matt took the initiative early in the second, only for string another 4 point run to take command. Matt then won 7 points in succession, with Paul only adding one more, to even the game at 1-1. The 3rd saw Paul mostly score 2 points for Matt’s 1 at each change of serve, taking it relatively comfortably. Paul went 6-3 up in the 4th, only for Matt to pull back to within 1 point at 7-6. Again, Paul fared better in the final to secure the win.
Stuart v Jasmine-having rather surprisingly taken the 1st and raced to 4-0 in the second, age and a lack of fitness became very evident as the wheels started to come off. Jasmine punishing anything mid-court or loose with some superb volley drops and working boasts. By the 4th Stuart’s tanks were empty and the inevitable result came swiftly.
Everyone subsequently retired to the Barnham Broom Bell for sustenance. |
