| Report: | After a long injury absence, Albie made a winning return to team squash in the fourth string match against Amber. The first game was closely contested, with Amber ahead until the latter stages through powerful hitting to a good length. Albie hung in, retrieving well, to clinch it at the death. The second was similarly close, with Amber marginally in front until the mid-point, when the pace started to take its toll. Albie chalked up 6 points in a row to take a commanding lead, with Amber only able to add one more to her tally. The wheels fell of for Amber in the third, with Albie securing the win at a canter.
Having swapped positions in the order with Neil, Paul had a straightforward win against Sam, taking commanding Leeds in all 3 games before Sam mounted any meaningful resistance. But this never looked liked unsettling Paul’s dominance.
Having been promoted to no. 2, Neil was again pitted against Ava, with Neil romping to a 9-1 lead in the first, only for Ava to gain some traction to claw her way to 6 points before losing the first. Neil again started the second in a similarly positive fashion, with Ava never managing to string a run of points together to wrestle the momentum away from Neil, securing the second more comfortably than the first.
The third proved to be a very different affair, with Ava taking the initiative to go 8-5 up. Her dominance was short-lived however, when Neil closed out their match with an unanswered 5 point run.
Sam’s powers of observation let him down in the first against Sutton the Elder, by not noticing he was playing a ‘lefty’. Clearly bamboozled, his opponent went 9-1 up before the penny dropped. However, it was too late to mount any meaningful reply. This he did in the second. Exacting a similar scoreline, with plenty of boasts wrong-footing his rather pedestrian challenger. The third was a game of two halves. The first seeing Stuart dominate to go 7-3 ahead, only for Sam to win the next 5 points to level the score at 8 all. Despite some extended rallies and frantic retrieving, Sutton secured 3 of the 4 remaining points to go 2-1 up. The strain of the previous game became evident early in the 4th, when a bout of cramp affected Sutton’s movement. With Sam taking the next 8 points it was evident Sutton had thrown in the towel as was preserving himself for the 5th. Having had a stern word with himself, and some valuable encouragement from his younger brother, Sutton used any remaining energy to maintain the challenge to 7-7. With 6’ 3” Sam still retrieving virtually everything thrown at him, and Sutton about to expel a lung, Sam secured his win when Sutton chose to drive cross court instead of the more obvious straight forehand and Sam managed to get his racket on it and put the ball out of reach of his floundering and utterly exhausted opponent.
We then headed to The Bell for the usual hearty grub and to dissect the evening’s events. |
