Report: | A great night for the neutral.
With three matches going to five games, the Broadlands home support was certainly treated to a lengthily night of squash. It was also a night of many comebacks.
First match on was Paul vs Michael. After Paul took a tight 1st game he looked more convincing in the second, and took a strong 2-0 lead. Looking relaxed and in control, it seemed that nothing could go wrong from here. But Michael took a close third game to keep things interesting and also took the fourth more convincingly. It was all on the fifth game, with Michael taking a 7-1 lead in the fifth, it looked as if it could only go one way, Paul never managed to get within more than two points of Michael, even after saving two match balls to make it 11-12. Michael took the game and with it the match 3-2, first comeback of the night complete.
Second match on was Hannah vs Adam, Adam cruised to a 9-0 lead in the first game it looked like it would be an easy night for the Fakenham player. It was to be anything but easy from that point forward. After losing the first Hannah came back in the second taking it 13-7. Then Hannah was able to sneak the third 14-12. Michael came back to take the fourth and force the match into a fifth and deciding game. A nervous game was in store to finish the match with both players wanting the win. Hannah went ahead early in the fifth and it stayed that way throughout eventually taking the final game 13-10 a strong performance after being 9-0 down in the first game.
The last two matches to go on were Sam vs Martin and Robert vs Adam. Martin pushed hard in the first two against Sam as both games went right to the wire, but Sam had enough to take both of these games 13-11 taking a 2-0 lead over Martin. Sam came out strong at the start of the third and pushed on from this point never letting Martin have a look in. Sam convincingly took the third 13-4 for a 3-0 win which strayed away from the current theme of 3-2's.
The longest match of the evening was between Robert and Adam. From 8-7 in the first Adam quickly took the next 5 points to take a crucial first game 13-7. The second game started similar to the first with it being tight between both players until Adam took a 5-3 lead and then raced away taking a great 8 points in a row to take the second 13-3. It looked as if there was no way back for Robert now. Adam took a 6-1 lead in the third and it looked as if the match would be over quickly. Robert himself then put together a run of points to get back into the game. At 10-10 in the third Robert was able to take the next three points after three lengthily rallies, bringing him back into the match. The fourth was almost identical to the third. Adam took a lead Robert came back to 10-10 and won the next three points to take it into a fifth. A massive fifth game was in store and it didn't fail to impress. Adam took an early lead, Robert again pulled it back. The mid part of the fifth was back and forward between both players. Later in the fifth Adam took a 12-7 lead having 5 match balls it looked in no doubt that Adam would take the match. At 12-7 Adam very sportingly conceded a stroke. After five big points Robert had brought the score to 12-12. The next point was crucial. Robert was able to win his sixth point in a row to have his first opportunity at match ball. Adam brought it back to 13-13. Two more big rallies saw Robert take a massive 5th game and the match with it.
Man of the Match: Tony Henden, for convincing Hannah to step in and play at the last minute.
Well played all.
