Report

Report:Both teams were keen to win this top of the table clash, and put down their marker as potential league winners. Broom Captain Adam Goodson put in a much improved performance to recover from 1-2 down to claim his first ever victory, 3-2, over Broadland captain Jake Bond. At 2-0 & 9-9 up Justin Millar looked on the verge of levelling the scores for Broadland against Adie Martin, when a torn achilles stopped him in his tracks and sent him off to hospital. Get well soon Justin. So 2-0 to Broom. Richard Fiske was made to work hard by Neil Sutton for his 3-0 win to get one match back, but the key match was at 2 between Mark Nicholls and Stuart Sutton. With Mark having retired through ill health during his match last week, his inclusion in the team was a risk. After Mark had narrowly won the first, Stuart recovered strongly to win the second and cruise through the third. The match only looked to be going one way, but Mark courageously returned to play out the fourth game. Despite appearing to be on the cusp of retiring after virtually every point, he battled gamely on and drew errors from Stuart who had perhaps generously eased off a fraction. A few more errors followed from Stuart and enabled Mark to take the last 3 points and pinch the game. Gutted at having to play another game, Mark again collapsed on the courtside sofa for 90 seconds (at least) of recovery time, with spectators again unsure if he was to return. The final game continued as before with Mark yo-yoing between periods of gamely sprinting around the court, and tamely hitting the ball into the tin for a brief rest, or stopping mid-rally as if unable to continue. His determination to carry on and finish the match took him to match point at 12-11, when he sent a cross court drive into the left side wall nick which rolled across the court floor to claim the most unexpected of match wins. Unbelievable heart from Mark, but without doubt matched by fantastic sportsmanship and understanding from Stuart Sutton throughout the entire match. This took the tie to 2-2. Wes Hicks of Broom gave everything in the last match to bring his team home, but the youthful legs of Samuel Henden proved too much, who was
able to claim a hard fought 3-0 win.
Injury, fightbacks, retirements & near retirements, but a great night of gritty, hard fought sporting squash matches in the best possible company.
